Stop Signs and Safety in the Neighbourhood

Stop Signs at 14th Ave and Old 9th Line NEW
You should have received a letter sent by Ward Councillor Logan Kanapathi indicating that York Region has conducted a traffic study at 14th & 9th and wants Town of Markham to support their decision in removing the 4-way stop and making it to a 2-way stop instead, to allow traffic to flow more swiftly East to West.

Supporting Legacy and Boxgrove Ratepayers Associations decisions, RFRA voiced our opinion to have this initiative stopped. Our reasons are that removing the signs will encourage more traffic, potentially increase the number of accidents and will affect our residents leaving our community at the second Boxwood entrance. We have asked for the signs to remain as-is to act as a traffic calming measure until 14th Avenue has a major makeover.

Request for a 3-way Stop Sign at Boxwood & Havelock
Unfortunately we do not meet the minimum requirements to support a 3 way stop at this intersection. Apparently, you need to have over 350 cars to drive through at any given hour. During the day of the study, we only had a maximum of 308 cars pass by.

It’s an unsettling explanation as it only takes one car to run over a child. We need to be vigilant at this intersection and report all incidents of dangerous driving to the police as this is the only way we can ask for a 3 way stop, when it is deemed unsafe.

Large Stop Sign for Havelock & Songbird
It looks like the day they did the study we were all responsible drivers complying to the rules of the road. Even if we did not comply, our location would not meet the criteria of posting a larger stop sign here and hence no changes will be made by the Town.

Please ensure that we all stop at the sign to avoid any collisions.

Traffic Light at the 2nd Boxwood & 14th Entrance
May 7th Update
York Region has concluded their traffic study and has indicated to us that we do not have enough cars leaving our community to warrant a traffic light here. It seems most of us leave via the first Boxwood entrance or at the Havelock entrance. On the plus side, we got a pedestrian pad for the school crosswalk!

We are still awaiting for York Region’s traffic study results (to have been completed this past January) to see if a traffic light is warranted at this intersection. We’ll update you with the results.
