RFRA Membership Annual Renewals
Membership renewal month has traditionally been every April. This year however we have agreed to move our Annual General Meeting to September to facilitate the ease of hosting our Summer Festival. Each Director and Executive has agreed to extend their 12 month term to 16 months. Hence membership renewals will most likely not start until the festival and will run into the summer. More information will be available soon.

Recycle Bins (Blue or Green)

One of our members wrote:
“We should advise residents about identifying their garbage, green and recycled boxes/bins so they do not go missing on to other people's properties.”

Windy days and un-named bins can result in missing recycle bins by the time you come home from work. Ensure you label your bins with your street address on it so that you can find them if they have been blown away.

You can purchase a new bin through the Town of Markham:

  • $18.00 for a green bin, and
  • $6 or $8 for a blue bin (depending on size)

However, if you have a broken bin, it can be replaced free of charge.

Illegal Signage all around Markham

Business signs are everywhere, on street corners, mailboxes, glued onto street signs and street lights, some impossible to remove. It makes our community and the rest of Markham look unkempt and messy. One of our residents took action and wrote to our Councillor, Logan Kanapathi for comment. RFRA fully supports this letter and hopefully based on Mr. Kanapathi’s reply, something will be done.

Dear Mr. Kanapathi:

I read in the local newspaper that you have been active lately on International Issues. I would like to bring to your attention a local issue, which is another component in the ongoing decline of one of the neighbourhoods in your constituency.

Myself and other members of the Rouge Fairways Rate-payers Association have made you aware of the all the rooming houses and illegal businesses in the community that are lowering the value of our homes and challenging our schools, but there is now another problem.

There seems to be a complete disregard for public property throughout the community.Unscrupulous businesses and ne'er–do–wells are plastering every available blank public space with bills and illegal signage which is creating a slum type atmosphere in our community.

Despite numerous complaints to the town, the practice continues unabated. The Rouge Fairways Ratepayer Association has even added mailbox and sign post cleaning to its spring cleanup agenda. Should we be billing the town for the service?

If Markham is a "Green Community", which is the message council is spending our tax dollars on newspaper ads to tell us about, this unabated defacing of communities has to stop, as vast majority of these ads are NOT recyclable and end up in land fill when they are disposed of.

How can you help our community solve this problem?

Regards,
J.T. Brazier

Dear Mr. Brazier,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Although I appear to be active on International Issues, you can be sure that I am also addressing all concerns in the Community as well.

Your concern about illegal signage is also one of our ongoing problems and by copy of this email, I am advising the Manager of our Bylaw Enforcement Department of this problem. The Rouge Fairways Ratepayers Association should not have to do this although we do appreciate your help, however, I am sure our Bylaw Enforcement will very efficiently take care of this.

Bill - Can you have your officers’ look into this please. Thank you.

Kind regards,
Logan Kanapathi
